Confessions of a Yard Saleaholic

We finally got a patio set! We've only lived here 3 1/2 years (which means 3 summers without a patio set)...no biggie. ;)
I love it!
Oh how I love a good yard sale.
:)
Maybe next week someone will have one of the Pottery Barn market umbrellas I want?
Hmmmm...I may have to suck it up for that one.
;)

What we REALLY need is obviously a new deck.

Confessions of a Yard Saleaholic

Saturday's sales weren't as profitable as I had hoped but I did get a couple of things...care to see?! :)

First up, pair of Pottery Barn sconce style lamps for our bedroom. $10 for the set (a little steep perhaps but the PB pushed me over the edge - you know how I roll). PERFECT for our "neutral" theme...

I do love that there are two stages of lights with these babies...atmosphere and reading - that was a pleasant surprise! :)

The owner of the lamps threw this basket in for free...you can't tell from this picture, but it's actually more of an olive/moss color...you know, the color that is slightly confused, "is it green or is it brown?"

Lastly, I purchased these 2 red chunky candlestick holders for $2 a piece...they'll give a nice pop of color to my cream colored built-in's (notice the Made to Crave book in the background!). I love red and am drawn to it like a moth to a flame. What can I say? ;)

I apologize for the yellow tone of these photos. I took the pics at night and apparently, the light I was using throws off a yellowish hue.

So, tell me...did you go out yard saling this weekend? If so, what did you get good?! :)

Confessions of a Yard Saleaholic: Playing Catch Up

Good morning!

Since I've been without a proper working USB cable, I haven't been able to share with you some of my yard sale finds from recent weeks. It's been killing me because I've had a couple of really good weeks and have found some super cute things! :)

Wanna see?!?!

I am especially excited about these 2 pieces which I bought separately (actually my inlaws bought the bottom piece for me). I plan on using them together in my school room.

The top piece is a handmade copy of this shelf from Pottery Barn (sold online for $229.00 - I got mine for $10 HA!):

I plan on recreating this basic look - painting both pieces to match, replacing the hooks, topping the bench with a cushion and possibly using some seagrass baskets for storage... I'll be sure to post "after" pics.

I also got this cute little thing @ an antique store in our area - love the humor. :)

For those of you who are still of the very antiquated idea that yard sales only have junk...think again, my friends!

One woman's trash is another woman's treasure.

By the way, those these are all household/decor items, I've also gotten great deals on DVD's, toys, clothes etc for the kiddos...even a new DS game for Nic for $2 - he was THRILLED. I didn't take pictures of any of that though - figured that you girls would enjoy the home decor more than all that. :)

Confessions of a [Yard] Saleaholic

Hooray hooray!

T
oday was our first 'official' yard sale day of the new season! Can I get a yay?! Can I get a 'what WHAT?!' Despite the super duper crapola weather and late night before, I excitedly woke up with my lovely alarm clock, threw on some salesy duds, made myself look presentable, hopped in the minivan and headed on over to my mom's to begin the day. Oh and I stopped at Wawa beforehand to pick up a 20 oz Chai Tea Latte WHICH BY THE WAY was a colossal mistake that I paid for at breakfast later with the literal shakes. #weirdness We picked up a paper and hit about 10 sales total (basically 2 neighborhoodish sales). All in all, it was an OKAY day. It was fun being out and getting our first taste of the season but the sales were sorta bland. I guess that makes sense though...bland day, bland sales. In any case, I did manage to pick up a little something to add to my summer decor:

Now, I typically do not care for lighthouses used for decor purposes so I will not fault you if you aren't a fan.

I prefer my lighthouses to look a little more like this:

Cape Cod, MA
(This makes my heart ache a little...I haven't been there in so long)

Most of the decorative ones I have seen make me wanna throw up in my mouth a little - mostly I think because people feel that one is simply not enough, let's do 245 in one room. Just being honest. However, I thought that because this lighthouse is a neutral color, has classic lines and doubles as a lantern...well, it had me at hello.

Originally $17.99 (Yay for the rare find with tags still on), I was happy to purchase it for a cool $2.

My plan: Place a cream colored candle inside to act as a literal lighthouse in my home OR fill it with a summery potpourri or collection of beach pebbles. I think that shells would be too kitschy. Not sure where this lady is going to eventually take up residence but summer decorating will be here before we know it! :)

What about you guys?! Did you go yard saling today and if so, what'd ya get good?!

How Does My Garden Grow AND 100th Post Giveaway Instructions

...my garden patch = success!

Okay, so it's not really a "patch" per se...but rather more like a garden via pots sitting on a baker's rack on my deck. In my mind though, it's still success. :)

I've been wanting a container garden for as long as I can remember but when I visited my cousin, Kelly and her boyfriend Steve in Arizona, I got inspired to just do it already!

This past Friday, I made my someday dream a reality and purchased some herbs and veggies...finally! Potted them last night and here it is...my very first ever container garden...

I'm starting out with the basics...

Parsley...Sage...Rosemary and Thyme...

The thyme is located in the front left - chives and basil are also included in this pot

I also got THIS basil plant...which smells DIVINE - actually all of the herbs smell DIVINE which is part of why I love them and am becoming a huge advocate for FRESH herbs

Okay so that's it for herbs...now let's move on to veggies

I got a couple of tomato plants...

This one already has 2 tomatoes on it!

As you can see, I even got a cage for it - can I tell you that I am a COMPLETE DORK and haven't felt such elation at purchasing an item in a long time as that silly tomato cage.

This is a smaller tomato variety - kind of shaped like a Roma tomato - her name is Juliet. HAHA - I just realized something ROMA-EO and Juliet. K, now this has become my favorite plant 'cuz I totally love that. My wish is that thou dost produce a vast amount of fruit...

Here are my Larry the Cucumbers

And I'm gonna call these guys Sergeant and Mrs. Pepper

I can't tell you how much joy potting these plants gave me last night...and to somehow put my joy into display, my neighbors literally set off awesome fireworks at the very moment I watered my last pot. Ha! :)

I'm hoping that my new veggies and herbs do well...I'm working on making my thumb a little greener...

My pansies which I've had for a couple of months are still doing remarkably well in the heat...

A couple of other things of note since I don't quite feel like coming to a close just yet...

I got this cool little lantern thingy at a yard sale last weekend...

It's kind of a lot of glass for a tea-ny (Oh, I am cracking myself up today) tea light so I may switch it out with a votive. The tea light came with it so...whatev's.

Also, check out this little rooster I got at a yard sale for $2 last weekend...

Super cute, right? I'm strangely attracted to roosters at the moment. Like I have some kind of rooster radar or something...oooh, I like how that sounds..."Rooster Radar". Told you - COMPLETE DORK.

Um...in other news...I rearranged my living room furniture...again...

It feels a lot more intimate...wish that I could do something about the darkness of it all though...when I walk into the room, it automatically makes me feel HOT...and not like "Oooooooh, Salvatore brothers hot"...(lol - had to throw that in there)...like "Ugh, I'm stifling, get this wool blanket off me in the 100 degree weather hot". Any good thoughts on how to lighten things up while keep the same color scheme?

OH! I almost forgot...I picked these babies out of my neighbors trash the other day...

I broke out into a nervous sweat and gawked around like I was guilty of a major felony before I carried them across the street but hey...what really matters is that I got them. I also bribed my 5 year old son to come with me...I don't know why...for protection?! lol

I took 3 at first...not wanting to be too greedy...if someone who trash picks could even be considered something as posh as "greedy"...ew, rats are coming to mind now. Gross.

Anyhow, I decided to go back for the 3 remaining shutters (this time, Nicolas could not be bribed so I had to brave it alone). I prayed that no one saw me and I know this is WAY LAME - but remember, this is coming from someone that USED TO want to literally wear sunglasses and a hat into Wal*Mart so that no one would think that I shopped there. And no, I don't know why. It's not like I grew up Miss Megabucks or anything. I'm a whackjob...there I said it so you don't have to. ;)

So...now I have...

6 metal shutters and I know exactly what I am going to do with them...or at least most of them...not sure exactly how many I'll need for my project.

But tell me...

This is going to be your entry comment for my 100th post giveaway.

Put your creative thinking cap on and tell me in a comment...what would you do with them? Also, please feel free to tell me if you "shop at the curb" (I just made that up and am seriously cracking up in my mind about it) and what was your most favorite trash to treasure creation that you've done.

K? K.

Everyone who comments (And sorry...but entries of "I would never trash pick, how disgusting!" will not be valid - if I can do it, you can do it. lol) will be entered in my 100th post giveaway drawing. Prize still to be determined as I did not get to HomeGoods today.

Can't wait to see what you guys come up with!

XO,
Jennifer

Yard Sale Purchases Week 4

Good dreary Monday morning! :)

I was able to get out to a few yard sales with my mom again this past Saturday. I was also able to get out without kids. Yay.

And surprise of all surprises, my husband actually had the kids at the park (and they were dressed fairly well) - all three of them - before 11 a.m.! The park he took them to is a 1/2 hour away. You have no idea what a feat that is. Seriously. I'm still in shock to be honest...it's exciting! :)

ANYWAY...here's what you really wanna know...what did I get?!

I'm REALLY excited about this purchase...

First let me explain a minute...

The bedrooms in my house are under construction and big things are going to be happening very soon. We're going to switch around who's room is who's etc. Since our house is a cape cod with dormers, we have space where each dormer juts out from the house inside. In an effort to use every space in our home efficiently, I've come up with a plan to incorporate a built-in desk for the kids room and a built-in vanity for the master bedroom. For those spaces, we'll need task lighting and so I've had my eye on one of these for the kids room:

http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/penelope-shade-and-cortland-swing-arm-sconce/?pkey=dceiling-wall-lighting

$79 for lighting though? While I may have bit the bullet and just bought it anyway...I'm ABSOLUTELY THRILLED that I didn't have to...because, I got THIS instead:

The picture does NOT do it justice...couldn't find a suitable background and then you have the stupid glare of my flash BUT...hello! It's Pottery Barn...it's like the same one that I wanted...and ya know how much I paid for it???

$5

I'm going to replace the shade b/c I think that it's a little small for what I am looking for but still...I'll take $5 over $79 any day. Now I can put the other $74 plus shipping into something else like delicious bedding...or in Pottery Barn's case, maybe a throw pillow or two. Grrrrrrrrr...

Ok so let's see...what else...

Oh, I got these little cuties at the same sale for 10 cents a piece...that just makes me laugh out loud...10 cents? You can't even get a stinkin' gumball for that anymore.

In case you can't tell, they are candle holders (they could also be taken for dumbbells sitting up on their sides...which quite frankly ALSO makes me laugh out loud). I don't have candles for them just yet but I have a sneaky suspicion that Marshall's or maybe even the new HomeGoods (ahhhhhh...do you KNOW the feeling I get when I think about it?!) will have a couple that will work beautifully. I plan to use them in my built-in redesign. :)

K....let's see....

What else?!

Oh yes, I got these super cute Hartstrings shorts in a size 7 for my son, Nicolas. He's wearing a 6 currently, but I think that with the adjustable waist and his height, they will just about fit him now.

I'm thinking about pairing them with a navy polo with perhaps a little red t-shirt peeking out around the collar...I don't know...maybe white, we'll see. ;) I paid $2 for these...

Here is a bike helmet that I bought for a $1 for my daughter, Natalie.

I love the cute little floral design.

I got it to go with this bike that my mom bought her at the same sale:

I forget how much she paid for it but it's in perfect condition other than the tires are a little dirty on their treads. Note how white the training wheels are! It's barely used. :)

I originally got this cookbook for a mom at our preschool that has twin boys with autism. It was only 25 cents...hello...the receipt was in the front cover from Borders and it was originally $24.99! As it turns out, another friend of mine is having to put herself on a gluten-free, casein-free diet so I am choosing to give it to her instead. I know myself and if I learned that I needed to be on a special diet, I'd want some good options for what to make for myself and my family. :)

I got these movies for my kiddos:

Nicolas got Star Wars Phantom Menace for his birthday and so I was siked to find this one at a yard sale for only $2...now he can find out what happens next! :)

Natalie loves her "Darbie's" (and so do I, only my Darby spells her name with a "y" - hehe) and so I found these cute little movies for her @ $1 a piece:

One last stop...and I didn't even want to get out of the car for this one because I was tired and because they looked like they had nothing but junk. However, my mom convinced me to get out and check out what they had and sure enough, we had so much fun at this sale! They had soooo much to choose from...boxes and boxes...of little make-up goodies. Don't worry, nothing was used...the girl happened to work for some company and got lots of stuff...not sure why...

Anyway, I was excited about my little purchases:

Sample of Clinique Happy
Beauty Rush lipgloss in...Cantaloopy
Clinique Super City Block in 40 SPF which I think will be perfect for my upcoming trip to Arizona - nice travel size too!
Clinique quick eyes cream shadow in Rock Violet

Clinique fresh bloom allover colour in peony
Victoria's Secret Spa Soothing Shave Cream
Clinique True Bronze Pressed Powder Bronzer

Clinique lash doubling mascara in Black
Clinique Glosswear for lips Sheer Shimmers in Whisper

I also got but not pictured because my battery died at the last minute; a full size bottle of Bath & Body Works Pleasures Body Splash in Midnight Pomegranate
Victoria's Secret Sweet Daydream Stimulating Body Scrub in Apple, Raspberry and Vanilla.
& a make-up palate with blush & 2 eyeshadows that are really pretty by mark (whoever that is).

So, that's that for my yard sale Saturday post for this week.

Hope that you all enjoyed it and got some great deals yourself! As always, please feel free to send me a comment with a link about your purchases this week! I'd love to see them!
