Hurricane Irene has moved on from SEPA but she left a little bit of a mark on our basement.
I had no idea that our basement could take on so much water!
And here all along, we thought that only a little bit of water would leak occasionally through our bilco doors with a heavy rain.
It figures that I am on my own this weekend and I have really no idea what to do about it. :(
But the good news is this...it taught me a lesson in faith.
Originally, we were supposed to build a schoolroom in our basement this summer but things never progressed and I decided at the last minute to move production upstairs to our home office.
Admittedly, I was annoyed, put out, frustrated, a little sad etc because let's face it, I had ideas in my head and I wanted what I wanted...what I thought was best.
The big room would have been awesome.
BUT...my God knows better. And I am SO THANKFUL that he does.
If we had started building (and according to my calculations, we'd have been just about finished by now), everything would have been completely ruined. Because we had no idea. We wouldn't have been prepared.
So, today, I'm so grateful for a lot of things...my family is completely safe, my kiddos and I had someplace to go to wait out the scary forecasts (Thanks Mom and Dad!), we didn't have any exterior damage to our home and yes, we have water in our basement but there wasn't anything down there of great value.
I'm so thankful to have a God who is in control instead of me.
Irene was great but as always...our God is greater. :)
XO
P.S. My heart goes out to all of the families who were not as fortunate as we were. I am praying for a quick recovery and peace to those that lost their loved ones.

Irene
Today has been sunny...and pleasant...and there is not any indicator in the sky that something bad is heading in our direction...only, it is.
The worst hurricane the East Coast has seen in 100 years is on her way and we can prepare...but God is the ultimate weatherman. The whole world is in His hands. Nothing happens without his knowledge.
The last I checked, Irene is set to hit our area sometime Sunday morning. I've already started putting our deck furniture in the garage and made plans to possibly stay with my parents this weekend. The grocery stores in our town are being wiped out of water and non-perishables.
Will Irene actually do damage here where I live? I'm not sure. Am I nervous? Yup. Little bit. But I know Who is in charge.
His eye is on the sparrow...and I know He watches me...
XO
Praying for the East Coast and hoping that Irene's bark is worse than her bite.
;)

"You're Made for So Much More Than All of This"
This song came on the radio on my way home from RU last night...and was the first song I heard this morning when I got into my car to go yard saling...
It may be coincidence but I prefer to think that God sends me love songs...
At the very least, he allows them to be playing on the radio (in this case, Word FM) when I need them most...
The song following this one this morning was this
I love these lyrics:
We pray for blessings
We pray for peace
Comfort for family, protection while we sleep
We pray for healing, for prosperity
We pray for Your mighty hand to ease our suffering
All the while, You hear each spoken need
Yet love us way too much to give us lesser things
Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
We pray for wisdom
Your voice to hear
And we cry in anger when we cannot feel You near
We doubt Your goodness, we doubt Your love
As if every promise from Your Word is not enough
All the while, You hear each desperate plea
And long that we'd have faith to believe
Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
And what if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise
When friends betray us
When darkness seems to win
We know the pain reminds this heart
That this is not, this is not our home
It's not our home
Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
And what if a thousand sleepless nights
Are what it takes to know You’re near
What if my greatest disappointments
Or the achings of this life
Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can’t satisfy
And what if trials of this life
The rain, the storms, the hardest nights
Are Your mercies in disguise

Last night in RU, we had an AWESOME message from Mitch Zejac (aka the most amazing preacher that I have EVER heard and he's not even a preacher!)
He spoke about how Satan is on the loose seeking whom he may devour...especially those in who's lives God is working the hardest... I know that we feel him working in our family every day... He's on a mission to steal our joy. And honestly, he's been winning!
Cue attitude change... We don't have to give the devil place in our lives just because he wants one!
It's hard though...it's hard to feel beaten down...defeated...lost... It's hard not to succumb when life throws crap at us and we feel like "what's the point?"
The POINT is...the point in ALL of this life is...GOD'S GLORY! It's all for his glory...
I'm terrible at explaining what I mean sometimes but let me try for a second anyway...
I do not think that it's a coincidence that every single person God used as an example in the Bible was someone who was BROKEN. It is only when we are broken that we rely on him FULLY which is really sad when you think about it. How often do we break down and cry because God has been sooooo good to us... life has been awesome... happy days all around... No, usually, when things are going well, God sorta gets put back in the "first aid kit" for the next time we get a spiritual, emotional, mental or even physical boo boo. When we are hurting and we turn to him, that is when we really ALLOW him to work and HE gets the GLORY! That may seem selfish of him and guess what?! It is...but not in a bad way. According to the Bible, God is a jealous God...but he is a PERFECT God so the kind of jealous that he's referring to is of the righteous kind. He created us FOR HIMSELF anyway...of COURSE he wants us to rely on him! It's through our trials that HE can shine the brightest!
Think about it this way...
Yes, we can look at someone who has it all...good job, great family, impeccable health...loads of success...and think, wow, God has really blessed them...praise the Lord.
But how much GREATER is God magnified when someone was broken...poor...desolate...DESPERATE...addicted...rejected...sick...lost...and then God touches them and they are made WHOLE again???
I have had the thought that I think that people who are saved later in life actually get the better deal than someone who was saved as a child...someone who was raised in a Christian home...went to church all growing up etc...someone who lived in a spiritual bubble, so to speak.
When you go through hell...it makes you appreciate your salvation so much more!
Some people struggle to understand what they were saved from because they have never known trial...REAL TRIAL!
Have you ever met someone who truly KNOWS what they were saved from?! It's POWERFUL! What a gift!!!
Aside from trials when you aren't saved...those that bring you to God for your salvation...there are also the trials that Christians go through - the Christian life is not one that is perfect FOR SURE! In fact, sometimes I think that the trials are WORSE than that of someone who isn't a Christian. Satan doesn't care about "bothering" someone who isn't going to point others to Christ. BUT...if you are doing HIS will...LOOK OUT. Whatever it may be...you don't have to be working in the church to get attacked...you could just be trying to eat healthier in the name of protecting HIS temple (1 Corinthians 6:19) or you could be trying not to overreact when a proverbial "thorn in your side" tries to get to you (I know this one WELL). It really could be anything...your car could get hit in your work's parking lot for the 5th TIME (and you think...why am I the only one getting hit?) or your child could be diagnosed with cancer (and you think...why US...why MY CHILD?!). OR...you have an overabundance of ANTS attacking your house with seemingly no rhyme or reason. Or your husband or wife has decided that enough is enough and attorney's have been called...papers have been filed...lives have been turned upside down. All of these trials can make us or break us...in the truest sense. We can use them to destroy our lives or we can use them to promote God's glory. We do this through our attitudes. And is it easy...NO (I actually wanted to say HELL NO but it didn't seem appropriate - haha)! Horrible, in fact. So many times, I have turned to God in ANGER instead of humbleness and a open spirit to His teaching ...I have obstructed God's glory by having a bitter attitude. Do you know that the world especially looks at Christians in times of trial? They are looking for us to MESS UP! Because then it solidifies in their minds that the Christian life is really no better than the unbelieving one.
This post is mostly a reminder to me...but if you glean anything positive from it, I'm happy for that too.
Here's to working on our attitudes...realizing that God has bigger plans for us if we rely on him through our trials...
"[We] were meant for so much more than all of this"...but we have to rely on Him to find out what it is...

Line Therapy
I love it because it was made by these hands...hands of a father who loves his daughter.
I love it because it resembles a cross...which reminds me of another Father who loves His daughter...

I love it because it's going to save us a ton of money on our electric bill...
I love it because it reminds me of simpler days...sunshine and warm breezes...
I love it because of this sweet little girl that gets to hang out with me as I'm hanging the laundry...isn't she cute? ;)
I love it because when I hang my laundry, I feel peaceful in a world where peaceful moments are few and far between.
I call it line therapy.
Just me and my laundry...my line and pins...and posts that hold it all together reminding me of a Saviors love.
(At the cross...at the cross...where I first hung the line. Bad joke, I know...but doesn't stop me from singing it every.single.time.)
I finally have my clothesline...
Let the therapy commence.

A Spiritual Lesson from Sonny and Cher
We have a couple of new residents here at our home...

I'm in love.
I have loved birds for a quite a while now but it's been an extra special amazing gift getting to watch these sweet wild little babies grow everyday.
Their Mama built her posh little nest in one of the glass lanterns I have hanging on my deck - as someone said on my Facebook, she must have known that I was a decorator and would appreciate her pretty little digs. :)
I've been watching Mama bird take care of her babies every day (Daddy bird tag teams) from my kitchen window and I gotta tell ya...it's inspirational!
I often am reminded of this verse:
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Matthew 6:26 (NIV)
♪♫ His eye is on the sparrow...(and the Robins)...and I know he watches me... ♪♫
I've been checking on the babies everyday and watching them grow (FAST!). It's sad to know that one of these days very soon, they are going to learn to fly and they'll be off on their own...
But for now...what a precious site to behold...

These last 2 pictures were taken just yesterday...you can tell already that they have grown a great deal since they were born. And they are getting all of those pretty soft feathers! Quite a difference from their little peach fuzz they were born with. :)
I'll tell you what, it's a good thing that that last egg didn't hatch - they would be quite crowded with a 3rd baby in there!
God knows what we need before we do...and though it's sad that 3rd little egg didn't hatch, he KNEW what was best...he always has our best interests at heart...even if we can't understand at the time.
This can apply in every area of our own lives...2 things I try to remind myself when I am struggling with answers to tough questions...
First a Bible verse:
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD.
Isaiah 55:8
Or even better, The New Living Translation, says "My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts," says the LORD. "And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine."
Isaiah 55:8
This song has brought me peace on a few occasions...and I often send it to a friend who is also struggling...I find it to be an unbelievable source of comfort when we are trying to rely on our own strength and understanding in trials...
Trust His Heart
by Babbie Mason
All things work for our good
Though sometimes we don't see how they could
Struggles that break our hearts in two
Sometimes blind us to the truth
Our Father knows what best for us
His ways are not our own
So when your pathway grows dim
And you just don't see Him
Remember you're never alone
God is too wise to be mistaken
God is too good to be unkind
So when you don't understand
When you don't see His plan
When you can't trace His hand
Trust His heart
Trust His heart
He sees the master plan
And He holds our future in His hand
So don't live as those who have no hope
All our hope is found in Him
We see the present clearly
But He sees the first and the last
And like a tapestry
He's weaving you and me
To someday be just like Him
God is too wise to be mistaken
God is too good to be unkind
So when you don't understand
When you don't see His plan
When you can't trace His hand
Trust His heart
Trust His heart
He alone is faithful and true
He alone knows what is best for you
God is too wise to be mistaken
God is too good to be unkind
So when you don't understand

I know that this started off happy and cute with the sweet little bird babies but all of this brought me to a place where Trey Love and Gabby Vogel come to mind. Trey Love, you probably already know - he is quite the little celebrity in these parts. Trey has neuroblastoma and he is currently fighting for his life. In the coming weeks, he will be receiving more treatment. Trey is 5 years old - please be in prayer for him and his family. You can read his story here. His mommy, Missy, updates regularly on his status. Gabby Vogel is my cousin, Kelly's, neighbor. She is 5 years old as well and the doctors just discovered a mass in her brain. Please be in prayer for Trey, Gabby and the numerous other children who have been diagnosed with cancer. I personally cannot even bare the thought of my own children going through anything like that. I cry for those parents and what hell they must be going through inside. In our frail human minds, we cannot even begin to understand why in the world God allows something like cancer to come to our children. It is unfathomable to me. But his thoughts are not our thoughts...and his ways are far beyond anything that we can imagine...we just need to learn to trust his heart, rest in him and pray...in whatever we are going through. It's literally all we can do.
I'm sorry to be such a downer there at the end...this post started out so sweet with my little birdy friends...
But just as a reminder...in the same way that God takes care of the birds of the air...how much more will he take care of us?! As his word says, Are [we] not much more valuable than they?
Take comfort in that today, my friends! I love you all!
XOXO

No Greater Joy

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
- 3 John 1:4
- 3 John 1:4
I am so happy to write that on May 9th, 2011, 2 of my 3 children asked Jesus to come into their hearts. One of the BEST nights of my life thus far (though I am not sure anything could beat it).
We had a busy day...full of trips back and forth to preschool, house cleaning, phone calls, making meals, baths and a late baseball practice. By the time, I finally got everyone in bed (late due to the late practice), the kids were still revved up from all of the action of the day. We sang songs, read a story, prayed, gave kisses and said our goodnights but upon check in several minutes later, kiddos were still not resting. When I went into their room to hush them again and say yet another stream of goodnights, my 6 year old son, Nicolas, asked me the question that every Christian parent longs to hear, "Mommy, how can I get saved?". He then said, "Do you think that you could tell me how to get saved tomorrow after school?". I wasn't about to wait until tomorrow after school when a request like that was brought forth...I thought that RIGHT NOW was a much better idea. ;) Thankfully, he was happy to oblige. He told me that he wanted to get saved...the relief that washed over me...ahhhhhh...I can't even tell you. Honestly, as much as I have tried to talk to my children about salvation in the past, I never really felt like I quite had the words to make a little child understand...I always felt a little awkward and unsure. BUT GOD (I love those 2 words paired together) gave me the words when I failed and this time I was able to relay the right message in the right way. :) I wanted to make sure that Nicolas understood and wasn't just saying the prayer to say it. We talked about what sin means and that God is a perfect God so he can't have sin in heaven. We talked about hell and that we all deserve to go there because of our sin. BUT GOD (there is that phrase again) loved us SO MUCH that he sent his only son down here to earth to die for our sins and all we have to do is ask him to forgive us of our sins and come into our hearts. I did not scare him into anything...he asked me of his own free will. I could tell that it was something that had been on his heart. He talked a little about seeing hell on Tom & Jerry and how scary it looked. We also talked about being saved and what that means when we die...about going to heaven and seeing all of our loved ones who have gone before us. Then we prayed together...he mostly spoke for himself and I helped out when he wasn't sure what to say. Afterwards, when I asked him if he really meant what he said and if he felt like Jesus came into his heart, he said with a big smile, "Yup! I can feel him!" :D Well...you can just imagine how that made me feel! I was relieved and rejoicing. No sooner had we finished our conversation than my little Natalie Rose chimed in. She has had Jesus on her heart for quite some time...asking questions etc. She said that she was ready to ask Jesus into her heart as well. Can you believe it?! Two in one night?! Even though, she was listening in on our conversation, I wanted to reiterate what was said and make it personal for her. She cried when we talked about hell...my heart went out to her. What a scary thought for a child. I am 34 and the thought of hell still scares me! I asked her if she was SURE that she wanted to get saved and she vehemently said yes. So, we also prayed the sinner's prayer together. What a night!!! :D Someone asked me if I cried and honestly, no, I didn't. I definitely cried before that many times, fearing for my children's salvation and if they didn't choose it at an early age or ever. That scared me. I worried over the age of accountability and if my children were of an age to understand what all of this means. I will struggle with worry...apparently, it's my new thing. So often, I question my own salvation...and the difference between head knowledge and heart knowledge. I know that Satan preys on that doubt and uses it to steal my joy. I do know this. My dad explained it very wisely to me a while back. He said, "Imagine if you and I lived a country apart and we didn't communicate at all...it doesn't make me any less your dad, it's just that the fellowship isn't there." In the same way, if I am not communicating with my heavenly Father on a regular basis...it's not because he is not my DAD...it's just because the fellowship isn't there. I thank God that salvation isn't based on our feelings. So many times, I feel like I'm not really saved...because if I was, how could I do this or that? (Now that I am thinking about it, it may have something to do with my legalistic Christian school/church upbringing) Salvation doesn't mean perfection...I don't know why I should think that would be different for me? CRAZY thoughts, I know. I'm working on it! In any case, I should not worry if my children meant it when they prayed. That is between them and God. I feel so lucky and elated to have been able to pray with them and introduce them to the Lord...that is reward in and of itself...if I never am able to teach them another thing in their lives, that will have been enough. :)
For right now, there are 2 more names in the Lambs Book of Life...Nicolas and Natalie Fanucci.
Isn't that AMAZING?!?!
"Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.

Nothing Else Matters But This
"Dost thou understand me, sinful soul?
He wrestled with justice, that thou mightest have rest;
He wept and mourned, that thou mightest laugh and rejoice;
He was betrayed, that thou mightest go free;
was apprehended, that thou mightest escape;
He was condemned, that thou mightest be justified;
and was killed, that thou mightest live;
He wore a crown of thorns, that thou mightest wear a crown of glory;
and was nailed to the cross,
with His arms wide open, to show with what freeness all His merits shall be bestowed on the coming soul;
and how heartily He will receive it into His bosom?"

Good Friday Remembered
See, my servant will act wisely;
he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted.
Just as there were many who were appalled at him—
his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being
and his form marred beyond human likeness—
so he will sprinkle many nations,
and kings will shut their mouths because of him.
For what they were not told, they will see,
and what they have not heard, they will understand.
Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way;
and the LORD has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the LORD makes his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.
After he has suffered,
he will see the light of life and be satisfied;
by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

While You Were Sleeping...
...I was blessed with the most incredible view...

...and I took some time to bake you a special breakfast treat...

...I had the absolute privilege of being able to bask in the warmest glow of a most amazing sunrise...

...while my bread was baking, I sat down for a moment and learned how to be...

...I prayed that someday I'll be able to live up to all of the wisdom found in this enlightening read...
...I tiptoed up the stairs, got quietly dressed, wrote you a note to tell you where I'd be and then proceeded back down the stairs...careful not to wake you...
...I pulled the delicious smelling bread from the oven to allow it to cool...

...and then I left for the gym...I don't know what it is but I love morning traffic when I am not pressed for time...
When I returned home from the gym, I opened the door quietly and took pleasure in the fact that you were all still sleeping...
So, I decided to sit down and write this blog post...still reveling in the silence...
Peace for just a few moments more...
Knowing that soon, my time will once again be yours and not soley mine...
All this while you were sleeping...
So when you ask me later what I've been doing since I've been up...now you will know...
And maybe next time, you'll be tempted to join me when you've seen how blissful it is...
But I hope not...
Because honestly, this time I covet...just me...the Lord...and His beautiful sunrise...
Isa 45:6 That they may know from the rising of the sun...that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.

Cleaning Up The Spilled Milk
Dear Friends,
I am removing the rants of yesterday and pressing on to a better today. There is no point in crying over spilled milk. It's best to get out the mop, clean it up and do my best not to let it spill again. I cannot keep others from spilling it but I can choose how I react to it. I thank God that his mercies are new every morning. I thank him that he forgives my rants before I even ask. I thank him for blessing me with friends and family who support and love me even when I'm a touch inappropriate. ;) Thank you to all who responded yesterday (both here and on my Facebook). I covet your prayers and encouragement always. I think that we all need that in order to make it through this crazy life. I have so many things to be thankful for and though there are things that I do not understand, I have to learn to trust that God has all of the answers when I don't. He created me for his purpose not mine. I need to learn to let go and let Him lead. And honestly let him lead as well. Neither are easy - I'm a touch stubborn - I know I know...SHOCKING. ;) Today is a new day - clean slate - the Lord made it, it's my job to rejoice in it and to quit whining about things that He's got covered.
Love,
Jennifer

Trust in the Lord
With all your heart
Lean not on your own understanding
In all of your ways acknowledge Him
And He will make your path straight
Don't worry about tomorrow
He's got it under control
Just trust in the Lord
With all your heart
And he will carry you through
Lord, sometimes it gets so tough
To keep my eyes on you when things are going rough
But then I turn my eyes up to the sky
and I hear your voice
It says to me:
Trust in the Lord
With all your heart
Lean not on your own understanding
In all of your ways acknowledge Him
And He will make your path straight
Don't worry about tomorrow
He's got it under control
Just trust in the Lord
With all your heart
And he will carry you through
So child do not be weary with the troubles
of this world I have overcome

What if You're Wrong???
What if you're right?
And he was just another nice guy
What if you're right?
What if it's true?
They say the cross will only make a fool of you
And what if it's true?
What if he takes his place in history
With all the prophets and the kings
Who taught us love and came in peace
But then the story ends
What then?
But what if you're wrong?
What if there's more?
What if there's hope you never dreamed of hoping for?
What if you jump?
And just close your eyes?
What if the arms that catch you, catch you by surprise?
What if He's more than enough?
What if it's love?
What if you dig
Way down deeper than your simple-minded friends
What if you dig?
What if you find
A thousand more unanswered questions down inside
That's all you find?
What if you pick apart the logic
And begin to poke the holes
What if the crown of thorns is no more
Than folklore that must be told and retold?
You've been running as fast as you can
You've been looking for a place you can land for so long
But what if you're wrong?
And he was just another nice guy
What if you're right?
What if it's true?
They say the cross will only make a fool of you
And what if it's true?

Better Late Than Never? "Decide to Be Authentic - Part 2 of Chapter 2"
“For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, like, Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.” (1 Peter 3:5-6)
“You are her daughters.” The emphasis is on what caused the change rather than the change itself. Literally, the original means “you became her daughters”. The way we become daughters of Sarah is through a commitment, a decision, to developing the habit of doing what is right and not giving in to fear. When we obey God and focus on the internals over the externals of life, we gain a less complicated life. We become low-maintenance women.”
We often hear the term “high-maintenance woman”. I have heard some women describe themselves as “high-maintenance” and I’ve also heard other people refer to some women as “high-maintenance”. I never thought much about it because I never considered myself to be one until I read Pam Farrel’s (Author of The Best Decisions a Woman Can Make – the book study is based on) description of a low-maintenance woman.
Here are a few principles that she taught her boys so they could steer clear of high-maintenance women. (And definitely ones I will be following as well once my boys become of age to start looking for a woman – I thank the Lord THAT is years from now)
“The less clothes a girl has on is directly proportional to the amount of baggage she is carrying emotionally. Little clothes means many bags. She’s a high maintenance woman. A high maintenance woman puts people in no-win situations. For example, she’ll ask, “Do I look fat in this outfit?” If you say yes, she’ll burst out in tears. If you say no, she says, “Oh, you have to say that – you’re married to me” or “You’re only saying that because I’m your friend.”
Here are some of her pointers on how to spot a low-maintenance woman (or LM women):
Either she will be wearing this shirt:
(though, probably not) ;)
OR
- An LM woman doesn’t ask for compliments, but she graciously receives them when given.
- An LM woman knows that winning and whining are spelled differently and should never be used interchangeably.
- An LM woman doesn’t try to wear you down. Instead, she seeks to build you up.
- An LM woman follows as well as she leads.
- An LM woman is more interested in the team working than the theme working.
- An LM woman knows how to use make-up, but she doesn’t hide behind it.
- An LM woman believes personal happiness is a benefit, not a goal or a right.
- An LM woman accepts a man’s input without needing his attention.
- An LM woman appreciates her girlfriend’s input but doesn’t need her approval.
- An LM woman realizes that a bad hair day, a broken nail, a run in the panty hose, or a change in plans are a natural part of the ebb and flow of life, not the makings of a tragic epic suitable for a TV miniseries.
Did any of those stand out to you and you thought…eesh…I think I’m high-maintenance in that area! I know that a few stuck out to me. The one that stuck out the most to me personally is that I am certainly guilty at times of thinking that I have a “right to be happy”. I’m also not a huge fan of “a change in plans”.
Home and Family
What are the two sources of significance that we rationalize the most in our heads?
You probably guessed…home and family (and the title of this section would imply)
The question is…do we value our homes and our children TOO much. Is it possible to value them TOO much? Our home for sure…easy; but our children? I know that it doesn’t seem possible but if we are truly honest and if we truly want to be authentic women, we have to say…yes, there are definitely a lot of times that I put my children before ANYTHING. Before my husband…before God…when that happens, we are valuing them TOO much (I have to admit that even saying that makes me cringe). I am guilty of this in the third degree and if it was illegal, I’d be on death row.
Moms, are we putting our relationship with God and our husbands at risk because we are completely wrapped up with our children? And please understand what we're talking about here...we're not talking about not loving our kids...we're talking about really loving them by teaching them how to get our priorities in order. And do you know that by having our priorities in order which is God first, our marriage second and our children third, we are actually giving them MORE security?! I know, crazy right? ;)
Pam Farrel gives an example in the book about a woman in the Bible who was barren. She longed for a child, waited for a child, prayed and begged God for a child. Hannah vowed to give the child back to God if He would miraculously place a baby in her barren womb. God took her up on the offer and Hannah conceived and bore Samuel. When he was my son’s age (preschool), she made good on her promise and gave Samuel back to God. He grew up under Eli’s care and became one of Israel ’s most celebrated faithful priests.
“I think that it is the very act of *giving our children back to God that allows us to be a tool that God can use to grow them. When we hang on too tightly, our children can become possessions of our hearts rather than precious creations in God’s hands.”
(*mentally, not physically - just to clarify)
“Ask yourself: “Do I use my children as a shield, a way to get out of personal growth activities like Bible studies, ministries, or volunteer work that would help me discover God or discover the gifts and abilities He’s entrusted to me? Am I hiding behind my kids because I have areas I feel insecure in, like interpersonal relationships or leadership?”
Um yeah, truth be told, I am sure that I do that at times…
This next paragraph was like one of these super annoying stink bugs in our home…and I heard it buzzing before I saw it and then…it dive bombed my head.
“Has your home become a showplace rather than a source of ministry? Our homes should be places of order, neat enough to live an organized life. But they should also be places in which anyone would be welcome. How welcome does a toddler feel in your home – or a teen?”
OH. MAN.
First, let me preface this by saying that in no way do I think that my home is a “showplace”. It has a lot of work that needs to be done and it is often times very messy. HOWEVER, that question…”How welcome does a toddler feel in your home – or a teen?” ...
Uh, I’m guilty.
My children have recently been charging me. I’m a “no mom”. "No honey, I don’t want you playing with that right now (loosely translated EVER)". "No honey, we’re not going to get into that this minute.” “No, for the thousandth time, we are not going to grandmas today!”
No. No. NO.
I want to change all of that. I want my toddlers and preschoolers to feel WELCOME in my home.
I want to be more of a “yes mom” like Ann.
Yes, you can ride your bike (even though Mommy really wants to be inside doing what I need/want to do)
Yes, you can help me make the cookies (even though when you stir, you have a tendency to spray flour all overly my just washed floor)
Yes, you can break out the Legos and spread them all out in the living room (even though the idea of finding them 6 months later gives me heart palpitations)
YES, I love you more than I love a clean house and peace and quiet.
And yes, let's take this time to sit down together (even though I have a million things to do) and let Mommy tell you about Jesus...
This has been something that has really been on my heart lately, if you can’t tell.
Anyway...
It’s about NOT seeking significance in our earthly treasures but in the one and only real heavenly treasure, CHRIST.
“We don’t have to hype ourselves up by depending on a title, material possessions, power, or position. You don’t have to grapple or claw to hold onto a symbol of prestige. This is a book (or blog study) about attitudes – most importantly, God’s attitude toward you. As you come to believe His opinions about you, they will change your attitudes about yourself. Your foundation is secure. You don’t have to go searching for significance – you already have a part in His plan!”
“As you get to know God, He will help you know yourself and know His significant plan for your unique life. When our significance is developed in our relationship with Him, we are free to be good moms, good wives, good career people – and our ability to be good in those areas will come because we don’t need them for our identity. Because we don’t need them, we can be servant and not think of ourselves so much. THEN God can use us.”
Let us all learn to trade in our fears and weaknesses for God’s strength and character.
Isaiah 61:3
A crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of splendor.
I want a splendid life, how about you?
“Decide you want to be authentic. Be the best you that God intended, and trade in the ashes of false sources of significance for the REAL DEAL. God’s power will work through you because of your relationship with Him.”
